The 2011 President's Day Tournament started off with a strong win against the Nevada Storm. The Jr. Wranglers set the stage for success. They captured another "W" when they defeating the Ontario Eagles 3-2, keeping them in running for first place with tournament powerhouse Beach City.
There next opponent, Beach City, proved to be the most difficult. Beach City had been pummeling every team in the tournament, but our Wranglers managed to keep them to 3-0, which is a tremendous feat.
Our final opponent in the preliminary rounds was LA Hockey. What a close game it was...2-1. The Jr. Wranglers were tired and certainly had the power to overtake the team, but a few errors cost us the victory.
Even with the two losses, we were in second place headed into the semi-finals. We faced LA Hockey again, and this time we were ready for victory. By the end of the second period, we were ahead 4-1. However, LA Hockey's confidence countered by our fatigue brought LA a victory. The final score was a devastating 6-5.
LA Hockey went on to face the BC Lightning in the championship game where the Lightning took home the gold.
The Peewees defeated the Arizona Mission in two scrimmages last weekend.
In their first contest, the Wranglers were on fire offensively as they scored eight goals in the game. Defensively, they excelled as well as they allowed very few shots on goal with only two finding their way into the net.
The second game proved to be far more challenging. The team that was ahead by so many goals the previous day found itself struggling to get ahead the second time around. During the first and second periods, the puck found its way in front of the Wranglers' net much of the time. However, by the end of the game, the Peewees wrangled up their proven dedication and drive and wrangled up a 4-3 victory.
It wasn't the championship game, but with the excitement at the Peoria Polar Ice Center, you would have thought it was. The Arizona Runners, seeded second at game time, needed a win against the Jr. Wranglers in order to compete in the championship round, but the Wranglers roped them in and ended their tournament play with 4-1 victory.
The entire team played flawlessly with great communication on the ice, powerful skating, accurate passing, and outstanding defense. Tiffany Lu scored the first goal of the game in the first period, giving us the 1-0 lead. Mikey Yochum and Kevin Szeghalmi scored one and two goals respectively in the remainder of the game. In an extraordinary performance in net, Tara Riley gave up one break-away goal out of nineteen shots on goal.
What an exciting win for the Wranglers! They ended the tournament in third place and an immense amount of pride. After tournament play, five members of the team were in the top thirteen in the division for individual points: Jude Purdy, Mikey Yochum, Kevin Szeghalmi, Scotty Cunningham, and Seth Montoya. Certainly, the Peewee Jr. Wranglers made their mark in Peoria.
